Ugo Rondinone Human Nature

Ugo Rondinone, the Swiss-born, New York-based artist, created a significant work of site-specific public art for Rockefeller Center.  Human Nature included nine colossal stone figures, standing like ancient sentries along the entire length of Rockefeller Plaza, between 49th and 50th Streets.  They ranged in height from 16 to 20 feet and weighed up to 30,000 pounds each.  Using rough-hewn slabs of bluestone from a quarry in Northern Pennsylvania, the artist imbued each figure with a distinct personality. Like a forest of giants, their immovable legs formed gateways through which visitors passed, sensing the tactile surfaces of these primal forms.  The exhibition was open to the public in the spring of 2013.  For details, visit Ugo Rondinone: Human Nature - Public Art Fund
